Commons-Blog Update

It is a great pleasure to announce a new link has been added to www.civichonors.com. Civic Honors has linked the Commons-Blog for some time and it is a truly enjoyable source of information and rhetoric. Make sure you check out the Commons-Blog it is an definitely an interesting read.

If you are not familiar with the project this is what they have to say about the history of the project, “The American Library Association's Office for Information Technology Policy is engaged in a number of initiatives to promote and support the information commons. info-commons.org is one such initiative, and we hope to use the site to keep you informed about other work in support of the commons.” I truly enjoyed the idea that the American Library Association is interested in the development of online information exchange. This has always been a primary research interest of the Civic Honors Institute and should prove to be worth reading well into the future.

Evidently editor Frederick Emrich noticed our continued problems with Weblog comment spam. Even noting that the highest frequency of the Weblog spam comes from those individuals interested in the sale a certain Pfizer product. The Webmaster has used everything from Jay Allen’s spam destruction project, "MT-Blacklist," and various other MT tips and tricks on the subject. If you have any ideas on how to plug the leak in the dam before it floods the valley please feel free to opine.

KANSAS JOINING CAMPUS COMPACT

Congradulations to the state of Kansas, Kansas State University has been kind enough to list information on Kansas Compact, "MANHATTAN -- On Oct. 15, Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius will join the Kansas Board of Regents and 16 college and university presidents to launch Kansas Campus Compact. Founding member presidents of Kansas Campus Compact will sign the organization's charter, recommitting their institutions to the civic purposes of higher education. Gov. Sebelius and Reggie Robinson, president and chief executive officer of the Kansas Board of Regents, will sign as witnesses to the charter."

"Kansas Campus Compact has as its mission the civic renewal of higher education."

"Our purpose is to promote civically engaged citizens, through creating and expanding academic, co-curricular and campus-wide opportunities for community service, service-learning and civic engagement," said Mary Hale Tolar, executive director of Kansas Campus Compact at Kansas State University."

"Kansas is the 30th state, and most recent, to establish a compact and affiliate with the national Campus Compact."

"Kansas is joining with 29 other states that have put the civic mission of higher education so high on their agenda that they are forming a state compact," said Liz Hollander, executive director of the national Campus Compact. "Together, over 900 campus members can be a real catalyst for the reassertion of the role of higher education in educating the next generation of active participants in America's democracy."

"Hollander will address the Kansas Board of Regents at their meeting in Topeka on Wednesday prior to the signing ceremony. The official launch of Kansas Campus Compact will be at 4:30 p.m. in the former Supreme Court Chambers at the Kansas Statehouse."

Hopefully this information will serve as a gateway to promoting civic endeavers like Civic Honors.

The World of Weblogs

The Civic Honors Project has discovered two very interesting thing to discuss about the world of being an academic based Weblog utilizing information technology and scientific research. Even a horse of a different color gets to participate in the world of Weblogs, web rings, and organica. The kind people at organica have been good enough to monitor what is going on in the world of this Weblog and it is greatly appreciated the institutional monitoring and memory is much stronger when it is digital.

It is also good to know that www.civichonors.com has been listed under Blogshares evidently since April of 2003 people have been buying and selling imaginary shares in the Civic Honors Project. In any event this is a positive sign that the world has been watching this webpage. We will continue to produce material worth reading and watching and if you see The Civic Honors Project on the web please let us know about it.

Weblog Spam

What should be done to companies like Viagra who is owned by Pfizer that pay individuals to produce spam originally in the form of email and now in the form of Weblog comment spam. The question becomes why does this company believe that it should be allowed to produce such swill and begged by the previous question what should be done?

In practical terms Rhetorica has an excellent strategy to destroy Weblog spam. has become somewhat of a verbal warrior on this issue as the Jay Allen shining glory emulated in the words the pen is mightier than the sword or in this case Viagra and Pfizer.

Stop Weblog spam it is not worth it, and one day we will find a legal recourse I am researching class action lawsuits right now to find out what can be done.
