Letter From Pat Roberts
From Pat Roberts
United States Senate
May 9, 2003
Thank you for contacting me about the Civic Honors Project. I admire your commitment to civic engagement.
I share your passion for civic participation. After the tragic events of September 11, I, along with several of my colleagues, introduced a resolution declaring the week of September 15, 2002, as “National Civic Participation Week.” The Senate unanimously agreed to this measure in December of 2001. Recently, I reintroduced a similar resolution declaring the week of September 11, 2003, as “National Civic Participation Week.”
During this time, Americans are encouraged to pay tribute to the victims of September 11 by celebrating democracy and honoring the unique virtues of American citizenship. The resolution encourages Americans to showcase democracy and freedom by engaging in the following activities: volunteering in their communities, voter registration, learning about democracy, and using technology as a means for communication and participating in the democratic process.
It is important citizens celebrate freedom. National Civic Participation Week proclaims to the world that democracy thrives, and that those who died at the hands of terrorists will always be remembered.
Thanks again for writing. I wish you the best of luck with your studies.
With every best wish,
Sincerely,
Pat Roberts
